Sehome

Sehome

As one of the original neighborhoods of Bellingham, Sehome is established and historical with special significance for the city. The town of Sehome was made a part of Bellingham in 1904 and remains a central part of the city today. Sehome Hill gives residents spectacular views of the Canadian mountains to the north and Bellingham bay. In character with its historic nature, the houses in Sehome are older and established, with large lawns and impressive architecture. Most houses are older builds, and are a mix of single family and multi family units.

Nearly all of the space in the area is developed, and its 3500 residents make Sehome the most densely populated neighborhood in Bellingham. Yet Sehome is anything but crowded feeling. Tall trees shade the streets and the mature landscaping lends a wooded feel to a suburban area. While walking through the neighborhood, residents enjoy the views, parks, and trails winding throughout.

The two main parks in Sehome are Laurel Park and Forest+Cedar Park; both provide residents with playgrounds, BBQ grills, open lawns, and basketball courts. In the summer, children can often be seen coming from every direction to play under the watchful eyes of their parents. Bordering the Southern and Western edge of the neighborhood is the Sehome Hill arboretum, managed by Western Washington University and the City. Citizens of the city can walk to the peak where they are met by spectacular views of the San Juans and the WWU campus. For the adventurous soul, Sehome is bordered by the Samish neighborhood where Galbraith Mountain lies. With some of the best mountain biking in the country, Galbraith is a haven for bikers, runners, and enduro athletes. Without a doubt, Sehome is right next to plenty of outdoor activities and scenery.

For shopping and dining, Sehome Village is home to the Haggen grocery store, an REI, and a dozen local businesses. Parks on Bellingham Bay are a short 5 minute drive away, and Lake Padden can be reached in 10 minutes, with its horse trails, golf course, playground, and boating opportunities. The local schools garner strong support from the community, and children in the area typically attend Happy Valley ElementaryFairhaven Middle, and Sehome High.
